The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was set up as a military alliance following the Second World War. Its primary role is to safeguard the freedom and security of its 28 members. Under the 2010 Strategic Concept the core tasks of NATO are decreed to be collective defense, crisis management and cooperative security. Decisions are taken as an expression of collective will of all member countries, meaning that the committee will be working towards a consensus on both topics.
