The Security Council is perhaps the most well-known and influential principal organ of the United Nations. Responsible for maintaining international peace and security, the body can establish peacekeeping operations, international sanctions and approve any new member to the UN. The committee consists of 5 permanent members, all able to veto any substantive resolution, and 10 rotating members, who lack this veto vote.
