Our world is constantly changing. We face new developments, as well as tragedies, on a daily basis and are confronted with the difficult task of making a difference for ourselves and for the society we live in. We face challenges in our every day lives — be it career decisions, personal choices, or global compromises. We face a steady development towards “harder, better faster, stronger”, giving us little time to thoroughly think everything through, putting us in front of “black and white” decisions. At the same time, we live in a time of crisis on various levels: Brexit, health pandemics, territorial claims, refugee crises and a shift towards less cooperation amongst international players and more aversion, based on fear and little understanding of common grounds. These crises are sometimes fuelled by incomplete and inadequate interpretations by media in a way that might lead some to think ‘What is actually gone wrong with our world?’ — and some to say ‘How can we make a change for the better?’
This, and many more, are the reasons young adults engage in various ways to try to make a difference: volunteering networks and summer programs are on the rise. More and more adolescents chose to be part of something bigger, making their voices heard and actively contributing to the changes that will forever influence us. One form of commitment is participating in Model United Nations (MUN), which gives many young minds the possibility to prepare for their future careers, as well as debate pressing topics and connect with others from all over the world, building long-lasting friendships. With this, I, as Secretary General of EuroMUN 2017, together with the EuroMUN Secretariat, am incredibly proud to heartily invite you to be part of this bigger something, make a change for tomorrow and participate in our conference, EuroMUN, from April 26-30, 2017.
Throughout the years, EuroMUN has become known as one of the most prestigious and most international conferences of continental Europe. Together with partners such as NATO, the President of the European Parliament and UNU-Merit, we have provided our delegates with high quality debates, ensuring their social activities do not fall too short and presenting the lovely, fabulous city of Maastricht. Adding to the abundance of cultural actives the city offers, it is also the birthplace of the European Union as we know it today. Being the heart of Europe, Maastricht will play a more significant role for our conference than ever before: after the historic vote for the United Kingdom to cease being a European Union member, the Union faces a challenge that nobody yet dares to estimate. Taking this incentive, EuroMUN’s theme reveals around global challenges and is about finding solutions to the widening gap between all spheres of our societies: rich and poor, uneducated and university graduates, male and female. Global Challenges: Pursuing Integration does not aim to make judgments on current developments; its most important goal is to find educated, practical solutions to solving the most pressing topics of our time. Where is the European Union going? What decisions will be taken at the Security Council level? What about the status of refugees, the state of global heritages and cultural legacies? Are we still acting in accordance with international law?
With this in mind, EuroMUN will ensure fruitful debates on current topics in the most interesting committees ranging from the European Council, NATO, UNSC, UNESCO to Crisis, a historical and legal committee and many more. We want to give you the opportunity to make a difference, to make your voice heard and to cooperate with your fellow delegates towards finding the best suited resolutions for your committees and approach problems with creative ways of solving them. In addition to the academic endeavours, EuroMUN invites its delegates to two enriching pre-programs, one of them including an official visit to the NATO Headquarters and the European Parliament in Brussels. The upcoming days before the conference give you the chance to already familiarize yourself with your colleagues and introduce you to the very heart of politics in Europe’s capital.
Upon arrival in Maastricht, we will seek to ensure your best conference experience yet and want to take you on a journey around Maastricht — after intense debates, our Social Program provides you with great opportunities to get to know Maastricht a bit better, dress up for our themed party and waltz the night away on our last evening at the Delegates Dance. Together with more than 400 delegates from more than a dozen different countries, we aim to create an unforgettable experience, academically as well as socially. Creating an international platform for exchanging views and opinions is the most suited form of coming up with solutions to global challenges — and pursuing new, creative ways of integration in all its aspects.
Throughout the duration of the conference, we all will face challenges ourselves: being prepared, following the Rules of Procedure, getting through the fourth day with copious amounts of coffee, producing resolutions, combating crises. The might seem minor, as everything else regarded abstractly; but all put together, they make up a complex puzzle, one that will be for all of us to solve, internationally, politically, economically, environmentally and socially.
EuroMUN is more than ready to engage in a puzzle-solving conference with you, as globally minded adults to change the world. We cordially invite you to be part of EuroMUN 2017, in Maastricht, The Netherlands from April 26-30, 2017! We are very much looking forward to working with all of you and engaging in what we know will be a truly exciting time!
On behalf of the entire EuroMUN Secretariat,
Secretary General and Conference Manager EuroMUN 2017
